History was made on 28 March 2021: the Hagedorn Group blew up a boiler house, the cooling tower, the scrubber of the flue gas desulphurisation plant and a 250-metre-high chimney of the former power plant, creating space for urgently needed new commercial and industrial areas. Germany's largest demolition this year was prepared intensively over nine months and broadcast live.

Symbol of structural change in the Ruhr region: Lünen coal-fired power plant successfully demolished. Steag's coal-fired power plant in Lünen characterised the region for over eight decades. In revitalising the power plant, we are not only using the entire process and value chain of our Group, we are also contributing in particular to the sustainability strategy of the German government and the EU to reduce the sealing of green spaces by creating greenfields.
